Sports viewership has recently increased and reached another level, some people think that lockdown must be one of the reasons but according to a recent study by Sports media watch, there is a slight increase in the audience when it comes to women’s sports. Recent NCAA college basketball created a buzz on social media when Oregon player Sedona Prince highlighted the inequality in the weight room of the women’s NCAA. College freshman Paige Buckers remained as the top followed college basketball player of the year.
Tweet on NCAA viewership by Sports Analyst LaChina Robinson-
“Soooo the women’s tournament doubled the men’s social media engagement last night with 39 MILLION impressions. I hope that when potential sports sponsorships are discussed that people do their homework. Right now Less than 1% of all those dollars go to women’s sports.”
According to UNESCO, only 4% of sports media coverage is devoted to women’s sports. I see these numbers changing in the sports media. Just women sports raised $3.5 million in seed funding, it’s the platform that is solely for women sports. Big names like Kevin Durant and Ellena Delle Donne invested in JWS.Amazon and WNBA announced the multi-year streaming deal this week. This deal will provide a legitimate source of funds to WNBA. These are some of the breakpoints required to celebrate women’s sports and raise funds for the leagues. With the WNBA and NWSL season about to kick off this month, I am hoping to see a bigger audience and more support for both leagues.
